28 July 2021: Nazek Ramadan, Director of Migrant Voice, said: “The 70th anniversary of the Refugee Convention comes as the UK government is introducing its new Nationality and Borders Bill which, if passed, would completely undermine the vital human rights protections for refugees and asylum seekers in this Convention.
“This Bill effectively scraps the human rights standards under the Convention and will prosecute people who are exercising their right to claim protection. It also sets a shameful example to other nations to introduce legislation which goes against the Convention and what it stands for.
“This Bill is wrong, morally reprehensible and inhumane. It will have a devastating
impact on people seeking asylum in the UK, and mark the end of protection as we know it. It must be completely overhauled.”
