Exclusive: ‘On The Move’ website claims to offer ‘reliable information’ but does not disclose government affiliation

The Home Office set up a website targeting asylum seekers with “misleading” claims to deter them from journeying to Britain, The Independent can reveal.

It created a fake organisation called On The Move, complete with a logo and glossy branding, which claims to “provide migrants in transit with free, reliable and important information”.

And migrants say they are more determined than ever to make the treacherous journey across the English Channel, with one 16-year-old boy from Afghanistan saying: “I will try until I die”. Others spoke frankly about the dangers of crossing the Channel – a journey that has claimed lives in the past – in search of a better life in the UK.A 20-year-old Sudanese man said: “I am ready to die, but I still have faith that I will cross OK.”A 17-year-old boy living in northern France said: “It is not possible to stop us, we can’t stop our journeys now.”We have seen much worse than this and we have already put our lives at risk so nothing can stop us now. “Another 20-year-old from Sudan said: “It is their fault for colonising our country. They take our land and our culture. “British government have always influenced our lives, the majority of people here are Sudanese.”

The adverts, which ran in Kurdish, Arabic, Persian and Pashto, included slogans such as “There is no hiding place”, “Don’t put your or your child’s life in danger” and “We will return you”

The Government spent thousands of pounds on Facebook ads to try and deter asylum seekers in France from coming to the UK.

The Home Office forked out more than £23,000 of tax payer’s money on online ads targeting migrants on the other side of the Channel between December and April.
